It’s said, the single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place. That’s true. How often when talking with the parents in your program do you feel like you’re not being heard? Parents feel the same way. Motivational Interviewing is a different way to communicate with parents that is more collaborative, supportive, respectful and inspiring. Best of all, it works.
Want more from your interactions with parents? These Tooth Talk Tips can help.
- In your discussions with parents, use your OARS:
O = Ask Open-ended questions.
A = Affirm positive behavior change.
R = Reflect back what the parent says.
S = Summarize what you and the parent discuss.
And, remember,
- Motivation to change comes from the parent, not you.
- It’s about (and up to) the parent.
- Don’t talk about yourself.
- It’s the parent’s job to figure things out, not yours.
- It’s your job to help motivate and direct the parent to look at and understand challenges…it’s the parent’s job to decide to overcome them.
