New Toothbrushing Guidelines Make Brushing Fun in Child Care Classrooms!

We know that good oral health is vital to a young child’s overall health.

We know that healthy teeth help a child talk, eat, grow, sleep, learn, smile, and hit developmental milestones.

We know that toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste is an effective, fast, and inexpensive way to protect little teeth.

We know that you are a key partner with parents in keeping children healthy and happy.

And, we know the new Guidelines for Toothbrushing in North Carolina Child Care Programs will help you do your job smarter, faster, easier, and better.

The new Guidelines, in both English and Spanish, were developed with input from the State of North Carolina Children’s Environmental Health Sanitation Unit. They explain the clear and easy steps to good toothbrushing in child care programs for both infant/toddler and preschool classrooms:

  • preparing to brush
  • brushing
  • and cleaning up after brushing

The Guidelines also feature State sanitation recommendations, the correct amount of good-for-kids fluoride toothpaste by age group, and helpful hints about toothbrushes, fluoride toothpaste, positioning very young children for brushing, and how to make brushing fun!

The Guidelines were created by Brushing Is Fun, Start By Age 1 project group, a collaboration of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the NC Division of Public Health Oral Health Section, funded by The Duke Endowment.

Want to prevent tooth decay and give the children in your care a great head start on overall health? Make brushing fun with these Guidelines!
