Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease. It can hurt...and may affect a child’s ability to talk, eat, learn, play, sleep, smile, feel confident, and hit important developmental milestones. Fortunately, tooth decay in children is also preventable. Stopping tooth decay is as easy as 1, 2, 3!
- Brush children’s teeth with safe and healthy children’s fluoride toothpaste twice a day. Remember: Use a smear the size of a grain of rice for babies, from that first tooth to age 3, and a small pea for me at age 3!
- Take children to the dentist for a check-up by the first birthday. Think of it as a well-child visit for the mouth. The dentist will do a simple oral evaluation and share good ideas for taking care of little ones’ teeth.
- Don’t give very young children juice and other sugary drinks. Did you know juice often has hidden sugars that may cause painful cavities in little teeth ... even in very young children? Instead, provide healthy beverages at meal times only, such as milk and water.
Remember, oral health affects a child’s overall health. Keep children safe and healthy. These tips for good oral health are fast, easy, and effective.
