Small, Easy Changes in Routine Boost Children’s Brushing Health

While more than 90% of New Year’s Resolutions fail, the 8% that do succeed are those that keep it short and sweet. The truth is, small, real-world changes can add up to big impact...especially when it comes to young children’s oral health. The key is repetition. (No one knows that better than the mom of a two-year-old happily watching Finding Nemo for the 400th time!)

Ready to make toothbrushing an important part of a young child’s life...for good? Make it a predictable, consistent routine, that children can look forward to.  The American Academy of Pediatrics’ program Brush, Book, Bed  is the perfect healthy habit, because it makes brushing easier and fun.

The Brush, Book, Bed message is clear and simple. Every night, at the same time, 30 minutes before bedtime:

  1. Help children brush their teeth.
  2. Read a favorite book (or two).
  3. Put children to bed.

(Helpful hint: make sure bedtime is the same time each night.)

Remember, keep toothbrushing enjoyable and effective. Use the right amount of children’s fluoride toothpaste: a thin smear the size of a grain of rice for babies up to age three, and a dot the size of a small pea for children ages three to six.
